J-Walk Blog Link Experiment

This could prove interesting. I’m game. I imagine he’ll see this link, since my small contributions are generally well covered by Trackbacks, Technorati, etc.

Asinine… Common Sense Surrenders…

Yesterday I made a few rounds. First I went to drop $300 on new tires for my car. They didn’t have them in stock, and told me to come back today and they’d be happy to put them on for me. After which I had to run and get my oil changed. After changing my oil, they told me I really needed a new air filter, but UPS hadn’t delivered the box full of them yet, and I’d have to come back today to get one stuck in. After striking out for the second time, I went to drop another $25 to have the Mexicans clean my car (easy with the armor all guys…).

So anyway, the reason I tell you all this is to explain what I was doing today. I went back to get my air filter installed and was sitting around waiting to get my new tires put on while I read the Greenville News. One article (scroll down for the second dark bullet) in particular happened to catch my eye. It’s short, so I’ll quote it here:

PETA protest — The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has written a letter to NCAA President Myles Brand asking the NCAA to stop USC and Jacksonville (Ala.) State from using the nickname Gamecocks.

Spurrier said he had not been aware of the report. But, he said, “I think most all South Carolina Gamecock people are not in favor of gamecocks fighting in a cockpit. I think we all agree that it’s probably a good law that that is no longer legal.”

“I think in a way, though, we’re proud of the animal, the gamecock, because when it gets in a fight, it fights until somebody dies. They’re tremendous fighters. The effort and so forth that those birds have is something to be admired in a way.”

The letter, which was given to USA Today by PETA, said cock fighting was a “hideous ‘blood sport’ that, like spousal abuse, bank robbery and driving while intoxicated, is illegal.”

WHAT IN THE FUCK IS THIS?!

The Gamecock has been the mascot for the University of South Carolina since before PETA even existed.

For reference:

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is the largest animal rights organization in the world. Founded in 1980 as a non-profit organization, it has its headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, and a claimed 800,000 members and over 100 employees worldwide.

Source: Wikipedia

At the turn of the century, after struggling for more than a decade under numerous nicknames, the school’s football team was first referred to unofficially as “Game Cocks.”

In 1903, Columbia’s morning newspaper, The State, shortened the name to one word and South Carolina teams have been Gamecocks ever since.

Source: University of South Carolina Athletic Traditions

That’s about 80 years of precedence by my count. And in those 80 years, how many people complained? How many people petitioned (much less successfully) to get it removed? How many people implied that the name of the mascot in some way encouraged cock fighting or cruelty to animals?

In fact, if you read further, you realize that the nickname has much less to do with the actual animal than it does a Revolutionary war hero from South Carolina:

In fact, General Thomas Sumter, famed guerilla fighter of the Revolutionary War, was known as “The Fighting Gamecock.”

How much more pathetic can we get? What’s next? Shall we insist that the Atlanta Braves change their name because it implies some type of discrimination towards Native Americans who gave their lives to defend their land? What about insisting that USC’s rival school Clemson change their mascot because “Clemson Tigers” somehow implies violence and retaliation towards innocent fuzzy little tigers?

Common sense has officially surrendered…

Post-Vacation News Reader Backlog

What? Has everyone been asleep while I’ve been on vacation? After 3 whole days of being in an internet-less void (that would be the Blue Ridge Mountains by the way…), I returned home to find that I only had about 450 unread entries in my RSS reader of choise (NewsGator Online!).

Now, considering I had about 200 unread entries when I left (travelling for work really cuts into my blog reading time), that’s only about 250 entries in 3 days, or about 83 entries a day. What’s with this? There should have been at least 100 a day…

Oh wait, Scoble took some time off to work on his book… I guess that explains the missing 20 entries a day right there. Gee, I wish I could get paid to blog about something all day every day. Unfortunately our company has yet to embrace blogging (thank god). I can only imagine what one of our blogs would be like… Can you say Marketing Bullshit? That’s a big girl!!

Welp, back to the reading. I’ve still got 400 messages to pick through now that I’ve finally finished picking through the 350 or so email messages I had. Hope I’ve been able to catch up on blogging since I got home this afternoon!

Got any topics you want me to rant about? Got something you think would piss me off (make me orgasmically happy)? Let me know!

Ugh, I just remembered that my next series of classes start Monday… So much for my vacation. I loved my one-week of summer relaxation, I really did…

Dissatisfied with an iTunes Song?

Is there anything one can actually do, should they be dissatisfied with the quality of a song downloaded via the iTunes music store?

I know they’ll happily help you out if you weren’t actually able to download a song, or if it randomly died, etc., but what if you’re not satisfied with the quality of the downloaded song?

So here’s the story. I check out the song Changes by Tupac (or 2pac, depending on how lazy you are). I hear the bridge in the preview, and realize that it’s the song I want. Click, it’s downloaded. I start listening, and it takes me a minute to realize… I can’t hear shit…

Sure the vocals are there, but I can’t hear them over the music. If this were actually a CD, I’d return it and demand my money back, but instead it’s a digital song obtained through Apple’s iTunes Music Store.

I know what you’re thinking, “It’s a 99 cent song you douchebag, just take it and shut up!”. Yeah, I don’t think so… Up to now, I’ve had absolutely wonderful results with the iTunes music store, both in variety / availability as well as quality and ease of use. And I have a VERY large sampling of results here. I’ve spent over 4 grand at the iTMS since it opened (I know, I just can’t help myself…).

But really, what can I do? If nothing else, I don’t want anyone else suffering through this song, but I can’t seem to find anything about dissatisfaction in the store’s information. In fact, all I see is legal-speak telling me that all sales are final. Is that the case? I’m not just bored of the song to the point that I want to return it and get another, the quality is horrible… Isn’t that a special case?

Any advice? Anyone out there had this problem? Anyone out there work for Apple? :)

The Last Piece of the NewsGator Puzzle…

So with all their current offerings (Online Edition, and Outlook Edition and Enterprise Edition), combined with their future offerings (Enterprise Edition and FeedDemon synchronization), what is the last piece that NewsGator needs to complete their RSS dominance empire?

I’ve got a one word answer for you…

Firefox

That’s right. The last piece of the puzzle for NewsGator is a Firefox extension that syncs with their other services. I absolutely LOVE Onfolio. I just wish they had a Linux-based version of their RSS reader and web clipper app, and to a sligtly lesser degree, I wish they had a web-based synchronization service.

I can easily substitute the clipping service with existing Firefox extensions (can you say Scrapbook anyone?). The RSS reader extensions however are less attractive. Sage is the mainstay, but honestly, it really sucks. I’m sorry Sage devs, but not only is it ugly, it’s not what I’d call ‘feature rich’ (or at least wasn’t the last time I checked. If I’m wrong now, please let me know.).

Pluck recently released a beta of a new Firefox extension that would integrate with their free online service. Unfortunately, Pluck has always and continues to suck major ass. Again, sorry Pluck devs, but your service is crap. From random accounts not sending out emails properly to horrid and utter website errors and lag, I’ve sworn off Pluck forever.

That leaves us with NewsGator. They dominate the Online, Outlook and now Enterprise markets, why not the Browser-based market as well? I know Firefox extensions aren’t hard to design, and the existing infrastructure is already there, so why not? If you guys are listening and want to know exactly what I’m talking about, check out Onfolio! They’re absolutely kick ass and top notch. Take a look at their RSS Reader and copy the entire thing! OK, I know you can’t do that, but it’d sure be nice to get a Linux-compatible version of it!

Until then, I’m wishing and waiting…
