Leaving school to go to uni, and having to choose then and there what you want to do for possibly the rest of your life is horrendous.

A lot of people have no idea. I was one of them. Eventually I chose Surveying (basically because I believed at the time that is all my final exam marks would get me into). Well my marks turned out better, but then you get a first round offer, and you figure “better be safe than sorry”, so I took it. It took me 9 years to complete my degree! The first 3 full time, and then part time whilst I worked. And I worked at Surveying, Oil and Gas Exploration (finished my degree during this time), Courier, and finally in to IT, and I’ll probably move on from here in the next 5 to 10 years.

So I’m a graduated Surveyor working in (basically self taught) IT Security!

I believe Uni’s here now have a very broad first year curriculum, so you can see what is what and then hopefully make a more informed choice of where you want your life to lead, and start specialising from year 2.

Wish I had that sort of choice back when.
