I find it totally insignificant, yet oddly interesting in a “gee, that’s peculiar” kind of way…
I use the Google Toolbar in Firefox, mainly just so I have a convenient Google Suggest-esk search box available whenever I need it. I also glance at the Pagerank indicator from time-to-time, usually when I’m at sites that are popular for me (like FeedLounge. Of course these sites include my blog, just because I’d love to see this site get more readership (how else shall I begin forming the Empire of Meller?).
So I was somewhat surprised when I looked up at the Pagerank indicator just now and saw that I’d dropped from the 5/10 rank I’ve held for over 6 months, down to a 4/10 rank. It’s times like these I wish Google could tell people what the secret mix was. Why was I demoted? I have a feeling it has to do with my rather lengthy breaks as of late, but it’s really just a guessing game to figure out why.
Huh… Welp, something to ponder as I return to my code.
Google just do it to mess people around.
Why? Because they can
Then it makes people work harder to get their page rank up, generating more web pages, which Google then index and can then point to advertisers saying “look at all this potential screen estate (like real estate except on a screen! – just made that up.) give us big bucks and we’ll do your advertising.
Or not…
Remember: PageRank is a relative algorithm ranking system. It might not be you doing anything, but rather others doing more.
