This Blog

This blog is powered by WordPress, although it spent almost a year running the best blogging platform around – Habari. I switched back to WordPress’ crappy codebase for the huge number of plugins already available, not because Habari was in any way inadequate.

Geek Toys

My primary desktop is a Core 2 Duo Mac Mini that drives dual 19″ LCDs. It’s also the recently-established home base for my iPhone 3G and new 160gb iPod Classic. My 17″ MacBook Pro (not a spiffy unibody one, unfortunately) goes with me just about everywhere and serves as my primary development machine.

I’m trying to (unsuccessfully, so far) teach myself some decent photography skills. My Nikon D40 probably hates me for the horrid shots I make it take.

My previous desktop, a Core 2 Quad Q6600 with 4gb of RAM, now serves as a Windows 2008 R2 HyperV box running a handful of virtual machines for testing. It also crunches BOINC CPU and GPU workunits (forĀ SETI@Home and Rosetta@Home) in its spare time.

To totally set myself apart as an utter systems geek, I actually run a second Window 2008 box as an Active Directory domain controller. It also handles DHCP and DNS along with file sharing for my network. Since it’s really only the two Windows servers that are members of the domain at this point I’ve been considering replacing this with a lower-profile Linux box, but it works so well that I just haven’t had the real motivation to do it. I’ve also idly considered virtualizing all that on my beefier box, but haven’t wanted to take that leap just yet.
