K2 Can Burn in Hell…

That’s it. I’ve finally told K2 where it can go… I just can’t take the quirks and bugs anymore, no matter how many incredibly cool features it offers (like those amazing K2 Modules… If only Automattic Widgets were that insanely cool!). I swear, if my modules disappeared one more time at random, I might have totally lost it and gone out hunting down random K2 developers…

If the K2 devs are out there somewhere, please, work on the quality and reliability of your code, will ya? I’d love to come back, but your recent releases have gone so far down hill I don’t even want to talk about it…

It Was Certainly Clutter-Free…

Last night in #wordpress, someone asked for my URL, then reported that it didn’t work… I quickly verified that they were in fact correct. Trying to load my blog returned absolutely nothing. I was med’d up, so I really didn’t care at that point. This morning, however, I took a closer look at what was going on.

Looks like the Clutter-Free plugin went a little overboard. While trying to login, I got notifications about headers already being sent by the Clutter-Free plugin. After deleting the plugin (thereby deactivating it), it looks like everything’s working perfectly.

I’m going to assume something besides the mentioned DIV ID’s in the admin panel changes from 2.0.4 to 2.0.5, but somehow I don’t think anything that major would change in a simple bug-fix release. In any case, be on the lookout for weird behavior if you give Clutter-Free a try…

Flock Sucks is No More…

I was checking out the new K2 style that I just activated, scrolling through some archives, and stumbled upon Go Flock Yourself from just shy of a year ago.

In it, I link to what I thought was a very funny post over at Flock Sucks. I clicked on the link, hoping to relive some of the funny memories, and was greeted with an unfortunate realization: not only has Wordpress.com made it incredibly easy for users to create their own blogs, but they’ve also made it unfortunately easy for them to delete them as well…

Flock Sucks is No More...

That’s too bad. I mean, the last time I stopped by (quite some time ago) they’d transitioned into some randomly meaningless blog shouting profanity and doing some kind of weird story-log concept. Still, there was some good content back there at the beginning, and now it’s all gone…

Super Plugins to the Rescue!

For those who may be interested, check out the new list of WordPress plugins used on this site. I’m very picky about my plugins, so there’s some really great stuff to be had there. I highly recommend every single item on that list.

The simplest, but most insanely wonderful plugin ever? Filosofo Uncheck Default Category. I can’t tell you how much time and aggrivation this one’s saved me…

One Stats Plugin to Rule them All!

I’m testing a new plugin for Wordpress that keeps track of visitors to your website.

Firestats is still in beta, but it’s looking incredibly attractive already. One simple plugin activation in your WP admin panel, and you’ll start getting in a flood of information about who (and what) is visiting your website.

Unlike most other stats packages available, where Firestats really shines is in its ability to drill down to the information you actually want to see. Its big feature as of the 0.9.x beta release is the ability to filter your stats, eliminating bots that are constantly crawling your website. By eliminating all that extra crap data, you can actually (and easily) see the user data you really care about.

Thus far, I’ve been particularly impressed. Omry, the developer of Firestats, hangs out in the Wordpress IRC channel, and is very responsive to suggestions and bug reports. With his excellent start on this plugin, I’ve been able to easily realize just how few real viewers I have, and just how many bots are out and about crawling around the web on a daily basis.

It’s not the most feature-packed plugin available (yet), but it’s off to a good start. If you’re looking for a new stats plugin, or just want to see what kind of development progress is made, I highly recommend that you check out Firestats and see for yourself just how much of your blog’s traffic isn’t real traffic.
